Gregory XIII, Pope  (1502 – 1585)
Pope. Born Ugo Buoncompagn in Bologna, Italy; he was elected Pope in 1572. Was vigorous with his propaganda attacks on Protestant beliefs and commissioned the reform that produced (in 1582) the Gregorian calendar that is still in use today.

This document is dated Rome, November 1, 1578. The curious leaden bulla or pendant seal attached bears on one side the name of the Pope and on the other the effigies of Saints Peter and Paul.
