Lafayette, Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de  (1757 – 1834)
French Statesman and Officer. Born in Paris, France. Served on George Washington's staff during the American Revolution. Lafayette's generalship and role in securing French assistance played a large part in the American victory. In France he was placed in command of the Paris militia in the 1789 revolution and of the French National Guard in the revolution of 1830.
